An official record of achievements witnessed by absolutely nobody.
There are moments in life when we accomplish something genuinely meaningful.
Graduations.
Promotions.
Finishing something difficult.
Learning something new.
Overcoming something we once thought impossible.
And then...
there are the achievements that contribute absolutely nothing to the advancement of humanity.
Like tossing a crumpled piece of paper across the room...
and landing it perfectly in the wastebasket.
You freeze.
Ohhhhhhh.
😂
Then immediately look around.
Nobody saw it.
This is devastating.
A great tiny victory becomes approximately 43% more satisfying when someone else sees it.
This is scientific.
Probably.
You look toward the doorway.
Empty.
“Did anybody SEE that?!”
No response.
The universe has failed you.
You consider retrieving the paper and attempting it again.
Do not.
We both know what will happen.
The moment has passed.
You were magnificent.
You'll simply have to live with knowing it privately.
You are folding laundry.
A pair of socks needs to go into the basket across the room.
You toss.
Perfect arc.
Swish.
Basket.
You straighten slightly.
Interesting.
Perhaps you possess abilities that have gone unrecognized.
Another pair.
Misses by four feet.
Hits lamp.
Career over.
🤣
You're leaving the room with both hands full.
The light needs to go off.
Elbow?
Too easy.
You reach backward with some completely inappropriate part of your arm—
click.
Success.
You keep walking.
Nobody applauds.
Again, concerning.
This one is magnificent because it happens faster than thought.
Something slips.
Phone.
Cup.
Pen.
Keys.
Your hand shoots out.
CAUGHT IT.
You stare at your own hand.
Where did that come from?
For approximately three seconds, you are a ninja.
Please enjoy responsibly.
Do not deliberately drop your phone to verify the skill.
The Department cannot replace it.
An object falls.
Instead of allowing it to hit the floor, you extend your foot and somehow soften the landing.
You have no athletic background whatsoever.
But apparently your body has been secretly preparing for this moment.
Someone witnesses it.
“Nice catch.”
YES.
Thank you.
Finally, appropriate recognition.
😂
You remove something from a shopping bag.
The empty bag needs to go into the bag-storage area.
You toss it.
It lands perfectly.
Inside another bag.
This is advanced.
If the bag lands with the handles facing upward, you are legally entitled to tell someone.
You're walking away.
The door is slowly swinging shut.
You reach backward without looking.
Catch it.
Pull it closed.
Continue walking.
You feel...
cool.
There is no other word for it.
Nobody else noticed.
Doesn't matter.
For one brief moment, you were in a movie.
A very low-budget movie.
But still.
🤣
Coffee.
Cream.
You pour.
Stop.
Perfect.
No measuring.
No second splash.
Exactly right.
You take the first sip.
Yes.
This is what mastery feels like.
Michelangelo had marble.
You have half-and-half.
We each work with the materials available to us.
You pull in.
Perfectly centered.
First try.
You open the door and glance down at the line.
Then the other line.
Beautiful.
You may even look back at the car while walking away.
Not vanity.
Quality assurance.
😂
You have a container.
You have leftovers.
You estimate.
Surely not.
You spoon everything in.
And somehow—
EXACTLY.
No extra container.
No wasted space.
Lid closes perfectly.
This may be the domestic equivalent of a solar eclipse.
You want someone to appreciate it.
You show another person.
“Look.”
They look.
“What?”
“It all fit.”
“Okay.”
Okay?
OKAY?!
Some people simply cannot recognize greatness.
🤣
You estimate:
“Probably about sixty dollars.”
Cashier:
$59.87.
Your eyes widen.
You have apparently developed financial clairvoyance.
This ability will never occur again.
But for twelve beautiful seconds—
you are an oracle.
Ah yes.
Our old friend.
You stop the microwave at:
0:01
No beep.
You stare at the display.
Perfect.
Somewhere, an angel receives its wings.
Or perhaps just a snack.
Let's not overstate things.
😂
These are the highest-ranking tiny victories because they cannot be reproduced.
You toss something casually.
It bounces off one object.
Hits another.
Flips.
Lands perfectly where it belongs.
Silence.
Everyone in the room stops.
You look at them.
They look at you.
Then someone says the sacred words:
“NO WAY.”
Oh yes.
Way.
You will be discussing this for several minutes.
Possibly years.
We spend so much of adulthood believing accomplishment has to be useful.
Productive.
Measurable.
Impressive.
But occasionally—
something goes exactly right for no meaningful reason whatsoever.
And our whole body responds:
YESSSSS!
Why suppress that?
Celebrate the paper toss.
Celebrate the perfect container.
Celebrate catching the keys.
Celebrate the first-try parking job.
There are enough things in life that don't go according to plan.
When the sock lands in the basket from twelve feet away?
Take the win.
Tiny victories may be celebrated in proportion wildly exceeding their actual importance.
Acceptable responses include:
A fist pump.
A small dance.
Finger guns.
A whispered:
“Still got it.”
Whatever it is.
😂
You may also immediately search for a witness.
However, if nobody saw it, the achievement remains valid.
The Department believes you.
Mostly.
Notice one completely insignificant thing that goes unexpectedly right today.
Don't dismiss it.
Give yourself the ridiculous little moment.
And if someone happens to be nearby—
turn immediately and ask:
“DID YOU SEE THAT?!”
Because sometimes delight isn't what happened.
It's the fact that for three completely unnecessary seconds...
you felt like a legend.
